On February 20, 1978, reigning World Wide Wrestling Federation titleholder "Superstar" Billy Graham was defeated by "The All-American Boy" Bob Backlund before a capacity crowd of over 22,000 rabid fans at New York's Madison Square Garden. The decision was controversial, as Graham's right leg had been draped across the bottom ring rope, which should have resulted in the count being stopped. The Superstar protested bitterly, but it was too late...the cherished diamond-studded gold championship belt was no longer in his possession. Somehow or another, Backlund always managed to slip away the belt during the subsequent rematches and, eventually, The Superstar gave up trying. Soon thereafter, he left the WWF for new challenges throughout the wrestling world.
But four years after his bitter defeat, nearly to the day, "Superstar" Billy Graham returned to the WWF, much to the shock of the fans in attendance and those watching around the country on cable. Bald, incredibly intense, and sporting a dangerous new arsenal of martial arts tactics, The Superstar was all business this time around. Immediately upon his return to the Federation, Graham took part in one of the most memorable and dramatic angles in WWF history...
Driven by a seething, bitter and all-consuming rage brought on by an unfair decision nearly a half decade earlier, the "eye of the tiger" engulfed The Superstar as he set about trying to find a way to quench the burning desire within. Drastic times called for drastic measures, and if politics were going to keep him seperated from his belt, well, then something had to be done about that.
In other words, if
The Superstar can't have the belt...then no one can!
