The log lift was the first of the ten events that made up the `80 W.S.M.C.  It was also the event that almost became the most notorious sports moment in network television history...

Sometimes when you work in a profession that is a total work, you forget that the rest of the world isn't.  Prior to the log lifting event, an idea struck me that I very nearly went through with, but thank God each day that I didn't.

My idea, the one that would shock the masses of photographers present and guarentee that my face would be on the cover of every magazine (sports or otherwise)?

Get color on tv when the log "scraped" the skin off of my forehead during a "shaky" lift.  That's right, I was going to put on my "crimson mask" so to speak, right there in front of the world.  With photographers from across the globe present, as well as the slew of international television cameras present, the image of my cut-open head, bloodied by "a lift gone bad" would've been front page news around the world -- especially back in those days!

Thankfully, the idea was eventually overpowered by logic, but at one point, I was seriously considering the drastic (but potentially very cool) stunt.
