The World's Strongest Man Competition that I competed in took place in 1980 at the Playboy Resort in Great Gorge, New Jersey. The competition was particularly difficult because the events themselves were just so weird! As a result of the strange nature of the lifts, a lot of guys -- including yours truly -- got injured while competing.
I was on track to placing in the top three when I pulled a calf muscle, and a few events later, my Achilles tendon. In the end, Bill Kazmier won the competition. Meanwhile, I finished the remaining events despite my injuries, but placed seventh overall, which was a bit of a disappointment to me at the time. Still, it was a great experience overall, I gained a lot of mainstream publicity, and had a lot of fun competing against some of the world's top athletes.
