It's no secret that "Superstar" Billy Graham influenced countless wrestlers both during and after his legendary career, and in a business where many of the peformers are also huge fans, Graham was admired by many within his profession. One of the many wrestlers that Graham touched was "Leapin'" Lanny Poffo, The Genius, younger brother of Randy "Macho Man" Savage and perenial WWF mid-card attraction.
Poffo's notorious pre-match poems (all of which were written by The Genius himself) were a great way to separate himself from the crowded WWF roster. Although some of his material was...well, at least it rhymed...Lanny's delivery was always very good, and he drew a lot of heat via the unique gimmick. The problem was, at the time this audio segment was recorded, he was supposed to be garnering cheers, and unfortunately, his poem gimmick was not well-suited for a crowd favorite.
But in 1988, when
the reluctant babyface Leapin' Lanny was facing another talented wrestler
who was also struggling to break out of the pack, Terry "The Red Rooster"
Taylor, in New York's famed Madison Square Garden, Poffo invoked The Superstar's
golden name in an attempt to get the fickle NYC fans on his side.
The retired Madison Square Garden legend, by then a color commentator on
WWF broadcasts, was seated ringside when Leapin' Lanny paid his ultimate
compliment to The Superstar...
