Although it is now commonplace for a champion to be the recipient of both cheers and boos from the fans, "Superstar" Billy Graham was perhaps the first Heavyweight titleholder to fit the definition of what is now known by many as a "tweener." However, a big difference with Graham was that he did not actively seek the fans' approval. Quite the contrary...The Superstar was portrayed as the most vicious, despicable man in the world of wrestling during his reign as the WWWF champion, and he did his best to garner the fans' hatred. However, The Superstar was just so colorful, exciting, and charismatic that many fans of the day simply couldn't help but like him -- which was a key element of his extraordinary drawing power.
