Do you think Jerry Garcia knew back in `77 that the Heavyweight wrestling champion was a fan of the Grateful Dead?
One of the things that helped get "Superstar" BIlly Graham over with the fans initially was that his gimmick was a contemporary reflection of the times, one that younger fans could identify with -- somewhat similar to the way Scott Levy's Gen-X character Raven gained popularity because 1990's fans could relate to it. The Superstar was young, hip, new and different -- nothing like his co-workers at the time, the majority of which still looked as though they should've (and could've) been wrestling in the forties or fifties, not the seventies. It was that unique and contemporary feel to the "Superstar" Billy Graham character that, among other nuances, helped Wayne Coleman become such a success so quickly.
