There have been many great, legendary wrestler-manager pairings throughout the long history of the "sport" of professional wrestling. Duos such as Lou Thesz & Ed "Strangler" Lewis, Bruno Sammartino & Arnold Skoaland, Nick Bockwinkle & Bobby Heenan, The Wild Samoans & Lou Albano, and/or Vader & Harley Race, among others, come to mind as highly successful pairings from different eras of wrestling that all shared one important quality:
They all complemented each other, heightened their collective and individual strengths, and hid any weaknesses in the eyes (and minds) of the wrestling public.
However, it can be argued that few, if any, were more exciting and successful than the inspired -- and ingeniously devious and exciting -- union between "Superstar" Billy Graham and his Grand Wizard of Wrestling.
Graham (the most powerful "big man" in the business at the time, excluding Andre) and The Wizard (the most cunning, articulate manager of the day, excluding no one) gelled together like few others, forming an "evil alliance" that was so charismatic and cohesive that the WWWF fans absolutely loved to hate them, and as a result of that "hatred," the duo packed arenas all across the Northeastern U.S. for Vince McMahon, Sr.
My personal Graham bias aside, I'm nearly positive that if the possibilty could somehow present itself, Graham & The Wizard would be equally, if not more, successful in today's wrestling climate. Unfortunately for Wayne Coleman and the late Ernie Roth, their partnership came a decade or two too early for the mega-money contracts they surely would have earned had their prime been in the mid-eighties or nineties rather than in 1977, when this photo was taken.
