Here we see a shot of The Superstar during his first World title program, as the challenger to perennial AWA World champion Verne Gagne. The cocky, youthful challenger and the respected veteran champion faced off in numerous battles across the multi-state AWA territory while doing exceptionally well in terms of live attendance and box-office revenue.
In past interviews, The Superstar has commented that Gagne was a skilled opponent who didn't hesitate to throw stiff punches or work heavy while trying to provoke legitimate anger from his foe and, at the same time, provide more realism for the fans in attendance. Of course, he owned the promotion and was Graham's boss (as well as anyone else who worked for the AWA), so Gagne could afford to push his opponent's buttons without fear of serious retaliation.
You know what they say -- management does have its perks...
